Ian Luxmoore

Ian has previously worked for the New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) as a monitoring analyst. He now teaches the policy analysis techniques papers in the Massey University Resource and Environmental Planning Programme and is undertaking PhD research into systems based macro energy modelling.

Ian has a Bachelor of Resource and Environmental Planning degree with honours.

Ian's PhD: Modelling the New Zealand Exergy System
Over the last 12 months Ian has progressed from theory to practice by implementing a first-cut exergy flow model for New Zealand.  This involved tracking energy and exergy flows through the main exergy processes in New Zealand, and estimating, based on their inputs and outputs, the exergy destruction associated with each broad sector's activities.  Reassuringly, Ian’s initial results seem consistent with similar models produced internationally.  He has now had to set his research aside to concentrate on his teaching for second semester in Massey University’s Resource and Environmental Planning programme, but there is still significant work remaining to expand and improve the model when he picks up his research again in November.   However, this complete prototype gives him a foundation to build on and develop further.
