Sustainable Pathways Objective 1 - Urban Metabolism

Objective Leader: Professor Murray Patterson

Increasing understanding of the biophysical functioning of cities in New Zealand should lead to a number of insights to achieve eco-efficiency and sustainability of urban systems. It will also provide the basis for constructing the scenario models in Objective 2.

Two case studies are initially planned (Auckland and Christchurch) emphasizing issues such as water use and solid wastes. The comprehensive nature of the existing Auckland stocks and flows model will offer the ability to do more targeted and spatially explicit case studies in that region. A flexible approach to case study applications is planned so appropriate opportunities can be seized.
