Sustainable Pathways Project (2003-2009)
This research, funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology Contract MAUX0306, will enable cities and regions to plan for Sustainable Development, by providing them with authoritative information on alternative future development scenarios. These scenarios will seek to illuminate and link the economic, social and environmental dimensions of Sustainable Development. Three linked objectives are designed to uncouple economic growth and social progress from environmental harm:
- Urban Metabolism: The aim of this objective is to understand the biophysical functioning of cities in New Zealand.
- Scenario Development: The aim of this objective is to build on the first objective by providing a wider socio-economic framework for developing city and regional scenarios.
- Indicators of Progress to Sustainable Development: This objective focuses on developing indicator and reporting systems that can guide and monitor progress to Sustainable Development.
The Sustainable Pathways Project has a number of research partners and is proceeding on an inclusive and collaborative basis.
