Objective 3, Milestone 5 – Regional Ecological Footprints

A set of land accounts has been developed for all territorial local authorities and regional councils for the years ending March 2001 and March 2004. These accounts provide estimates of land use by 48 economic sectors. This is the key building block necessary to calculate the Ecological Footprints and is a considerable update and improvement on those used by McDonald and Patterson (2003). A paper outlining the importance of trade in estimating the ecological interdependence of New Zealand and its regions has been published in the International Journal of Ecological Economics.
