A Complex Systems Study of the Implications of Anthropogenic Perturbations of the Global Biogeochemical Cycles

Nicola Smith is a Market Economics Ltd-contracted researcher for NZCEE working on the Sustainable Pathways contract.

Nicky's has a FRST Enterprise scholarship to do a PhD through NZCEE. A key task she hopes to accomplish in her research is to develop an integrated model of the Earth system that captures insights from both the natural and social sciences. She will focus on:

  • natural systems - biogeochemical cycles
  • socio-economic systems - economy, demographics
  • interactions within and between these components

An overview of the issues covered in Nicky's PhD research, "A Complex Systems Study of the Implications of Anthropogenic Perturbations of the Global Biogeochemical Cycles", can be found in the powerpoint presentation here.
