Objective 1 - Integrative Analysis of Food-Fibre Value Chains

Objective Leader: Dr James Lennox (NZCEE)

This objective has developed an extensive database of environmental pressures, social impacts and economic performance within an extended input-output framework. The input-output framework centres on the economic transactions that link production every sector of the economy. Input-output techniques allows us to construct environmental, social and economic indicators for sectors' own operations, as well as those of their extended supply chains. The database has drawn on primary data collected by other objectives within the EF+ programme, as well as on extensive secondary data sets produced by Statistics New Zealand, the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry and other agencies. Much of the analysis performed in this objective is aimed at providing an understanding of the current performance of the food and fibre sectors. However, the input-output modelling techniques are also being used to develop future scenarios concerning the development of the food and fibre sectors, and to assess the impacts of policies (the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme). Finally, the sectoral-level input-output framework can also provide inputs to Life Cycle Assessments or other detailed analyses of specific products or processes.
