Objective 6 - Environmental Impacts of Forestry and Wood and Fibre Processing

Objective Leader: Per Nielsen (Scion)

This objective will quantify the resource inputs into New Zealand’s plantation forest estate and wood processing by undertaking detailed life cycle inventories for each stage for the forest growing and wood processing sectors. Such inventories in the first two years will focus on forest growing and harvesting and take into account differences in planting and silvicultural regimes, transportation systems, and water, chemical and energy inputs, to determine the ecological burden of the forest growing sector. By linking this analysis to the other objectives, the relative impact of forestry can be compared to that of alternative land uses.
