Research History
Ecological Footprint of Waikato Region
This project initially focused on the calculation of the Ecological Footprint of the Waikato region, using input-output analysis. The method makes explicit the role of inter-regional trade in the Ecological Footprint, identifying the origin of biologically productive land appropriated in interregional trade. The Ecological Footprint of the Waikato region was found to be 7.8 ha per person.

This project has now been extended to include all regions in New Zealand. The map compares the Ecological Footprint for each region with actual land areas. This research was undertaken by Mr Garry McDonald with help from Dr Murray Patterson for calculation of interregional flows.
